This was the first of two pieces I did for the Cricket Magazine story entitled "Torpedoed!". It told the story of the sinking of the British ship HMS Tuscania and the men who risked their lives to save her crew.

The piece shown here was printed on the top half of the opening spread of the story. It depicts the crew's frantic efforts to escape the sinking ship in the moments after the torpedo struck.

The design of the ship and the uniforms are based on photographs from the period. I didn't have time to arrange for any models, so I posed for quick reference shots of all the sailors dressed in an overcoat on my back porch in the 90 degree Michigan summer heat.
